A washing machine needs three things: a cold water supply with an isolation valve, a waste connection that drains without siphoning, and a level, stable position. We fit all three. For a straight swap we disconnect the old machine, check the existing valve and waste, connect the new hoses, level the machine and run a test wash to check for leaks.
For a new position — a kitchen refit, a utility room or a machine moved to a cupboard — we run new pipework, fit a new washing machine valve and install the waste so the machine drains properly.
Water supply and plumbing connections
- New or replacement washing machine valves (the blue or red-handled tap behind the machine).
- Tee connections into existing cold supply pipework.
- Replacement fill hoses — rubber hoses perish and are a common cause of floods.
- Low water pressure to the machine traced and fixed.
- Dishwasher and washing machine sharing a supply set up correctly.
Waste pipe installation and overflow problems
The drain hose must go into a standpipe at the right height or into a sink waste spigot with a non-return valve. Too low and dirty water siphons out of the drum; too short and the standpipe overflows onto the floor. We fit standpipes with traps, sink waste connections and new 40mm waste runs to the drain.
If water backs up out of the standpipe or the sink gurgles when the machine empties, the waste is usually partly blocked with lint and detergent. We clear it and, if needed, re-route it to a better fall.
Integrated vs freestanding washing machines
Freestanding machines are simple to swap: the valve and waste sit behind the machine. Integrated machines sit behind a cabinet door, so the hoses, valve and waste must fit within the cabinet depth and the door has to be mounted to the machine. We install both, including fitting integrated door hinges and plinth adjustments, and make sure the isolation valve stays reachable.
Common washing machine plumbing faults
- Leaking underneath: a split fill hose, a loose hose connection, a worn valve washer or a leaking waste joint.
- No water coming in: the isolation valve is off, the fill hose is kinked or the inlet filter is blocked.
- Not draining: a blocked waste pipe, sink trap or standpipe, or a kinked drain hose.
- Water in the drum when off: the drain hose sits too low and the machine is siphoning.
- Banging pipes when filling: water hammer, fixed with a hammer arrestor or pipe clips.
What to do if your washing machine is leaking
- Turn off the machine at the wall socket — do not touch electrics if you are standing in water.
- Turn off the washing machine valve behind the machine, or the main stop tap.
- Mop up and check whether the water is clean (supply) or grey (waste).
- Call 07307 202652 and an engineer is with you within 45-60 minutes.
