A blocked toilet is one of the most stressful household emergencies — especially if the bowl is filling instead of draining. Before you call a plumber, four methods will clear most domestic blockages in 15 minutes. Try them in order and stop the moment water starts rising; that is a sign the blockage is further down the drain and needs professional clearance.
First: stop the bowl from overflowing
Lift the cistern lid and push down the float to stop water entering, or close the service valve on the supply pipe behind the cistern (quarter-turn with a flat-blade screwdriver). Put down old towels to absorb spills.
Method 1: Flange plunger (works 70% of the time)
You need a proper flange-cup plunger, not a flat sink plunger. Insert the flange into the pan outlet, build up a seal, and pump 8–10 times sharply. The trick is creating water hammer — pulling up sharply is more important than pushing down. Repeat 2–3 cycles.
Method 2: Hot water + washing-up liquid
For soft blockages (toilet paper, soap, fat) pour half a bottle of washing-up liquid into the bowl, then a bucket of hot — not boiling — water from waist height. The detergent lubricates, the heat softens, and the height creates pressure. Wait 15 minutes and try a slow flush. Never use boiling water — it can crack porcelain.
Method 3: Toilet auger / drain snake
A toilet auger (around £20 from a DIY shop) reaches around the U-bend. Insert the head, crank clockwise, and feel for the obstruction — push gently and rotate to break it up. Do not use a metal kitchen drain snake, which will scratch the porcelain glaze.
Method 4: Wet-vac suction
If you have a wet-and-dry vac, set it to liquid mode, wrap the nozzle in a wet cloth to form a seal at the pan outlet, and pull the blockage backwards. Empty between attempts and disinfect afterwards.
When to stop and call a plumber
Stop and call us if water keeps rising despite plunging, if other waste appliances (sink, bath) also drain slowly, if you hear gurgling from the soil pipe, or if you can smell foul drains outside.
